MAGIC MIRROR: SARAH PUCILL AND LAURA MULVEY IN CONVERSATION
16 October 2015, 6 pm
Birkbeck Cinema, 43 Gordon Square, London, WC1H 0PD
Sarah Pucill and Laura Mulvey in conversation on:
Magic Mirror
Sarah Pucill, UK, 2013, 75 min.
+ Cindy the Doll Is Mine
Bertrand Bonello, with Asia Argento, France, 2005, 15 min.
The Self-Representation in Visual Culture research group presents a double-bill of films that experiment with the re-staging of self-portraits
as a form of mise en abyme.
In these two films, which are very different in many ways, both film-makers restage self-portraits by other artists. In Magic Mirror, Sarah Pucill weaves selected self-portraits and poetry by French surrealist female artist Claude Cahun together with her own poetic reflections. In Bonello's short film, Asia Argento plays both a female model and the photographer for whom she poses, as an echo to Cindy Sherman's
self-portrait series.
Sarah Pucill, who will be present to introduce and discuss her film, is a film-maker & photographer who lives and works in London. She is also Reader in Fine Art at the University of Westminster. Many of her films
are in the LUX Artists’ Moving Image collection.
